THE

AUTISTIC

CAMERA

The Autistic Camera is a multidisciplinary research project that began development through my role on The Stimming Pool.

The project seeks to understand how normative modes of filmmaking can constrain (neuro) diverse perspectives, opening up opportunities for new cinematic languages that can allow neurodivergent filmmakers to express sensations that cannot be communicated verbally.

Autistic Camera Workshop

As part of my research I have developed the Autistic Camera Workshop, which guides participants through various methods of sensory, empathic storytelling and encourages them to think about how to embed sensory subjectivity into their own filmmaking practice.

Workshop content includes

  • A brief history of neuro-normative film coding

  • Examples of identity-first sensory art-making

  • Examples of sensory/empathic filmmaking by Mel Baggs, Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, and more

  • Interactive discussions in response to sensory filmmaking

  • An in-depth case study of sensory filmmaking in The Stimming Pool

  • An opportunity for participants to develop their own sensory manifesto that they can bring into their own practice

The workshop has previously been held at Otherfield Film Festival (2025), RestFest (2026), and included as part of the UCL x Open City Docs Co-creation Models For Inclusive Film Practice short course (2026). It can be delivered both in-person and online, and can be tailored to the specific group/setting.

Please get in touch if you would like to enquire about hosting a workshop.
